This past weekend I attended my first DSA meeting, held in a cavernous church basement that was littered with dozens of “F-ck ICE!” and “No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA” picket signs. The meeting was for people who were interested in joining the DSA; Called “DSA 101”, it was an introductory course led by a public school teacher. In the fifteen minutes between my arrival and the event’s start time, about twenty-five white people trickled into the room.

The instructor started the class by lamenting the recent loss of DSA gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong. Almost everyone in the room had Hong buttons pinned to their bags or shirts. One woman was using a soda coozie with a Hong quote printed on it: “If you need me I’ll be balls deep in bourbon.” The instructor blamed Hong’s loss on the consolidation of the Democrat party around the “centrist, moderate” David Crowley and his annoyance with current Democrat Governor Tony Evers’ endorsement of Crowley. He then read a quote from a German Marxist, Bertolt Brecht: “The persecutors are wicked simply because they persecute. The persecuted suffer because of their goodness.”

The leader then began outlining the differences between socialism and capitalism, placing particular emphasis on the working class. The group instructor, who also claims to run and edit a local socialist magazine, asked the group to define the working class. The next few minutes produced a brief discussion on who was included in the working class: Workers, but not business owners (Who were, of course, stealing labor). Wage earners, but not the police. Children, but also not children. All people, but not everybody, because as one ambiguously gendered individual stated, “We have to keep in mind that anyone could become disabled at any point.” Everyone enthusiastically nodded in agreement. “Workers Deserve More” was the three-word summary used to explain the difference between capitalism and socialism.

“I just think that socialists have an amazing opportunity to really take advantage of our current moment…”

Said the 30-something year old woman sitting next to me at the DSA meeting. Everyone else at the table, including three other millennial women and two gentlemen who were late-Gen Xers, nodded in agreement. “Now more than ever, people need what socialism has to offer.”

The instructor walked the group through some of the DSA’s core principles: Expanded public resources, health care for all (Including gender affirming care and access to abortion), housing for all, finishing reconstruction by ending white supremacy, ending mass incarceration, and abolishing the police, whom were described as “An unaccountable, racist, oppressive institution.” Feminism was also described as a core tenant of the DSA, describing women as constituting a majority of the working class, and stating that all forms of housework were oppressive. Springing from this was a call to “End patriarchal domination and give full equality for women and gender non-conforming people, and absolute support for trans rights.” Finally, he mentioned the Green New Deal. During a small group discussion where we were asked to say which of these social causes we were most passionate about, the majority of women in my circle noted their particular passion for “climate justice.” A young man wearing a pride tank top walking by overheard this and chimed in, “Soooooo true, Comrade!”

The instructor then explained how socialism is an inherently international movement. He criticized the “American military industrial complex,” mentioned the need to free Palestine, demanded that Israeli leaders be “prosecuted for genocide,” and bemoaned that America had punished Cuba with sanctions as “punishment” for being a communist country.

The last major point he hit on, of course, was abolishing ICE. At the very mention of ICE, attendees started booing and yelling “F-ck them!”, while the public school teacher at the front of the room smiled and laughed. “I don’t care to live in a state where people can be abused and murdered by Stephen Miller’s lunatic Gestapo,” He said, before going on to explain that “ICE is a tool of American imperialism, racism, and violence… It is built to oppress, terrorize, and murder people. Socialism is not a fan of immigration enforcement writ large.” He blamed all immigration issues on American imperialism.

Around the end of the session, the instructor said the quiet part out loud: “[ICE] is not something that has existed since the constitution, although the constitution is not that great in my opinion.” He laughed the comment off and mumbled something along the lines of “Don’t tell my job that I said that.” The other attendees cried out in agreement, barking about how it was “Old” and a “Living document.”

Walking away from the event, I realized that the general consensus among everyone involved was that they thought of themselves as victims. The instructor encouraged the idea that all of their problems were caused by the capitalist ruling class. Their individual problems would be solved by handing over their autonomy to the state. The DSA is not simply coalescing around empathy, but around a seething hatred for others. The socialists cosplaying as “social justice warriors” are gravitating to a much more dangerous philosophy: Jealousy.

542% in one day: Chinese robot stock Unitree goes vertical

Unitree Robotics shares jumped 542% in early trading on their Shanghai debut after the Chinese humanoid robot maker raised about 6.1 billion yuan, or $905 million, in its initial public offering.

• Shares hit highs: Unitree shares climbed to 968.1 yuan after reaching as high as 1,100 yuan during the Shanghai STAR Market debut that drew heavy early investor interest in the robotics maker.

• Investor group strong: AI company DeepSeek invested about 140.8 million yuan while existing backers include technology giant Tencent, boosting the profile of the Hangzhou-based humanoid robot company.

• Superman robot specs: Unitree unveiled its new Superman humanoid that can jump two meters from a standing start and run at speeds of up to 12.66 meters per second ahead of the listing.

• Market size growth: Morgan Stanley raised its China humanoid robot shipment forecast to 50,000 units this year and expects the overall market to expand from $2 billion to $15 billion by 2030.

Target raises outlook after Q2 beat and surprise tariff refund

Target posted second-quarter net sales growth of 5.3% and comparable sales of 3.8% that topped estimates, while a $752 million tariff refund lifted earnings and led the retailer to raise its full-year guidance.

• Broad category strength: All six major categories grew with food and beauty leading the gains while apparel and home lagged, which executives describe as multiyear journeys requiring more assortment changes for better results.

Estee Lauder surges after crushing sales and raising margins

Estee Lauder reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $3.63 billion that beat estimates and raised its adjusted operating margin outlook for fiscal 2027 as the beauty company showed signs its turnaround is gaining momentum.

• Fourth quarter beat: Adjusted earnings reached 39 cents per share versus the 32-cent consensus while organic sales grew 5%, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of organic growth for the company.

• Full year recovery: Full-year adjusted EPS rose to $2.51 from $1.51 a year earlier with net sales increasing 5% to about $15 billion, ending a stretch of annual revenue declines.

Trump pauses 50% Canada tariffs after forcing a deal

President Donald Trump late Tuesday paused 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports that were set to take effect at midnight, saying the United States and Canada have a deal subject to finalizing documents.

• Talks with Mark Carney: The pause followed trade discussions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday ahead of the scheduled tariff implementation under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act.

• Targeted goods and value: The duties would have hit roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports including hockey sticks, wine and other consumer products after complaints of discrimination in vehicle, alcohol and dairy sectors.

AI’s $3 trillion off-balance-sheet time bomb finally goes mainstream

WSJ finally sees what got flagged months ago. Nine big tech names now carry $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet AI commitments, up $1.2 trillion in a single quarter. Uncommenced leases alone hit $1.2 trillion. Purchase obligations another $1.9 trillion. Meta’s Hyperion stays hidden until the rent checks start. Capex was the tip. The real tab lives in the footnotes. Exactly the spend reckoning we called when Google got punished for spending like a drunken sailor on AI and the $2 trillion chip carnage slammed into support.

• Winners? Nvidia locking the $500 billion private-credit backstop. Suppliers who get paid whether the models monetize or not. Chinese open-weight models crushing token prices more than 50% and grabbing share with dirt-cheap compute.

• Losers? Hyperscalers running negative free cash flow while the depreciation wall still sits in construction-in-progress. Pure-play labs still burning cash. Anyone long the multiple without reading the lease footnotes.

• Next? Margins get crushed when the deferred depreciation lands. More SPVs or a funding window that suddenly shuts. Token price war accelerates if Chinese models keep undercutting.

They hid the leverage in the footnotes while the Street celebrated the supercycle. Now the bill is visible and private credit is the layer funding half of it. Sentiment still lets them raise. When that window closes the only question left is who still has real cash flow. Greed was good. Visibility is better. The weak get flushed. The disciplined collect.

Photonics is printing while copper fries itself into toast

Don’t believe me? Who chooses copper over fiber optic for home broadband? Same deal here, just on a giant scale. Optics is the only pavement that moves data across million-square-foot AI data centers without melting. Copper is a toaster oven. Nearly $700 billion in hyperscaler spend has no choice. Concentration is extreme 23 names control over 80%. This is not retail circus money.

• Winners? Alphabet, Fidelity, Nvidia, Saudi PIF and every early private investor who rode the private valuation into public liquidity. They just got paid in transparency and price strength.

• Losers? Anyone still short this thing or praying for unlock supply to crush it. The float is expanding and the stock keeps climbing. Weak hands already sold.

• Next? More phased unlocks every couple weeks into fall. Demand is matching supply so far. Watch the $150 level it is the real technical battle line from the IPO.

Gen Z is lighting their retirement accounts on fire at the sportsbook

More than half of 18-to-29-year-olds took money they planned to invest for retirement and dumped it into sports betting last year. 26% now call gambling a deliberate long-term wealth strategy. They feel financially behind, hate traditional compounding, and think a parlays can close the gap faster than a 401(k). This is not fun money for most of them. It is their plan.

• Winners? DraftKings, FanDuel, prediction markets and every operator skimming the vig while Gen Z donates their future. Pure transfer of capital from the young and impulsive.

• Losers? Gen Z themselves. Their retirement balances, future net worth, and any shot at compounding. Same crowd already torching the American Dream elsewhere.

• Next? More surveys, more losses, more “I feel behind” rationalizations. Policy noise will come, but the behavioral damage is already priced into their balance sheets.

In “Gen Z torches their American dream” I flagged their retirement funds as the biggest losers from short-term thinking and rejected compounding. Sports betting as a “strategy” is just the next chapter of the same suicide. Reality does not care about their feelings.

30-year yields smash to the highest since 2007 as the bond market finally prices the debt binge

The long bond just hit 5.29%. Highest since the financial crisis. Last week’s 30-year auction cleared at 5.216% worst terms since 2001. Sticky inflation, endless Treasury supply, AI-driven corporate issuance and fading foreign demand are the accelerants. The market is done pretending deficits are free.

• Winners? Cash, floating-rate paper, and anyone who stayed short duration. Also the Treasury itself if it can force the market to fund the AI boom at these levels.

• Losers? Long-duration holders, pension funds locked into old paper, and the government’s interest bill. Every basis point is real money leaving the budget.

• Next? More upward pressure until something breaks either fiscal restraint, slower AI debt issuance, or a hard landing that forces the Fed’s hand. Fading this selloff still looks dangerous.

This is the bond market’s version of a margin call on Washington’s spending addiction. Rates this high rewrite every equity multiple and every private credit deal. Capital is getting expensive again. Act accordingly.

Synchrony, the issuer of Amazon, Walmart and Lowe’s credit cards cards, just partnered with OpenAI to let shoppers finance purchases inside ChatGPT using those private-label cards. No more redirect to a website. Real agentic checkout with real credit. Integration will take months because the brand partners have to play ball, but the direction is clear. OpenAI is turning ChatGPT into a transaction surface ahead of its own IPO.

• Winners? Synchrony, OpenAI, and every retailer whose card is already in the wallet. Also consumers who will spend more when friction disappears.

• Losers? Traditional e-commerce funnels and any payment rail that still requires a redirect. The chat becomes the storefront.

• Next? Revenue-share fights, more AI platforms (Claude, Gemini) demanding the same access, and a surge in impulse credit inside the conversation.

This is how agentic commerce stops being a PowerPoint and starts moving real dollars. Synchrony just bought a seat at the table. The rest of consumer finance is still watching.

The Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation revealed the design plans for the Global War on Terror (GWOT) memorial that is slated to be built on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the plan garnered a swift—and brutal—reaction online. Veterans of the (GWOT) ranging from top lawmakers to regular troops made their voices heard, expressing their dissatisfaction and disappointment with the current plan. Many demanded that the Foundation go back to the drawing board and come up with something better. Even the founder of the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation, Andrew J. Brennan, spoke out in an opinion piece published on Military Times calling for a new design and new leadership for the Foundation.

I share their disappointment.

I served for 9 years as an infantryman in the Army National Guard, from 2003-2012. During that time, I was called up for two deployments in support of GWOT: first, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and then in Iraq. When I heard that there were plans in the works to place a memorial to GWOT on the National Mall, I was cautiously optimistic that it could be made in such a way that it would truly honor the service and sacrifices of those who answered the call to duty.

This design fails to do so.

In the first place, it is unintelligible. The function of a memorial (from the Latin memoria) is to bring to mind something in order to encourage reflection. Hence, memorials should be clear in their meaning to allow the thing memorialized to be easily and readily brought to mind. This means they should not require extensive explanation to be understood: explanation interferes with the immediacy of the experience. This design fails at that basic task.

But secondly, and more fundamentally, it fails because it seems to forget what it is. This is not just a memorial but a war memorial.

The nature of war—involving, as it does, conflict, destruction, injury, and death—is such that it is inevitably tragic. Though the human condition is such that it is often necessary to engage in warfare, these aspects of war mean that it should be avoided whenever possible.

And yet, terrible as it is, war also enables a kind of human greatness. Many of the greatest human actions that punctuate human history would not have been possible in the absence of war. In his Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle highlights the virtue of courage as that which is most characteristically displayed on the battlefield.

Though courage as turns out to be the lowest in the taxonomy of virtue for Aristotle—and even if, as Cicero reminds us, we can speak (analogously) of courage in other contexts—courage nevertheless serves to begin the movement toward higher virtues. If this is true, then it would seem to imply that there is something intrinsic to human nature that looks to war as a kind of elevation of itself.

Consider that many of the greatest works of literature and art—from the Iliad to the Bayeux Tapestry to the Song of Roland to the Charge of the Light Brigade to Saving Private Ryan—take war as their subject, in order to highlight the great acts of courage, commitment, patriotism, and sacrifice made possible only in the crucible of war.

Of course, war is violent and therefore it does leave wounds—physical, mental, and emotional—on those individuals who participate in them. And, for those who never return, it leaves scars on families, communities—vacancies that can never be filled. These wounds do require healing, and there is a need spaces that encourage reflection and healing are important. But as important as reflection and healing are, this is not the primary task of a war memorial.

This is for two reasons.

First, since the trauma of loss is an intrinsic part of the human condition, it is not unique to the experience of war. If memorials are simply about healing from traumatic experiences, why single out wars to memorialize and leave aside the countless other human experiences in which trauma of loss is present. The reason for building war memorials is to commemorate what is unique about war—of which, the wounding and loss is only a part. The reason for building war memorials, in other words, is first to encourage reflection on the virtues that war enables and the sacrifices it entails, and only secondarily for therapeutic purposes (if at all).

Second, war memorials serve an inherently public function: they act as permanent reminders of the war in public space. This is particularly true of those on the National Mall. Their public function is to encourage remembrance by future generations of the sacrifices made by earlier generations. In this way, they foster filial piety and gratitude. When a memorial is conflated with a therapeutic exercise, on the other hand, the memorial trends to lose meaning with the passage of time as those of the generation who endured that trauma pass on.

Fortunately, there are models that we can look toward for inspiration. The recently opened World War I memorial, located just off the National Mall at Pershing Park, is an excellent example of a memorial that encourages remembrances of courage and sacrifice. Its stunning bas relief, designed by sculptor Sabin Howard and entitled A Soldier’s Journey, echoes the Campbellian “hero’s journey” motif. Yet, it is not simply jingoistic. It does not shy away from depicting the hardship and tragedy of war, but neither does it wallow in it. It perfectly captures both the heroism and the horror of war—and the burdens borne by those who participate in the fighting, as well as those who are left behind.

One suspects that this was made possible by the fact there are no living veterans of that war, and, in that sense, there was no temptation toward the therapeutic. In this sense, the task of a war memorial was far clearer in that case: inspiring remembrance for future generations. We can, and should, learn from this model. By asking “what will this monument mean once all those who served or lost someone in this war are gone?” we can more clearly recognize the proper task of a war memorial: public anamnesis for the preservation of cultural memory and the recognition of the greatness that is paradoxically enabled only by the tragedy of war.

University systems have been completely captured by radical ideology, but they’re not setting a dangerous new precedent: Making political endorsements. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) broke its 110 year long tradition of not making national campaign endorsements. Who did they choose to back? None other than the Muslim socialist Senate candidate, Abdul El-Sayed.

The AAUP released a statement that praised Sayed for championing “debt-free and tuition-free education,” something that he has been advocating for since 2018. The AAUP has simultaneously launched their own initiative for free college, claiming that doing so would “counter the far-right’s extremist attacks on higher education.” They argue that doing so would favor black and hispanic applicants, who have historically higher rates of faulting on their student loans. The AAUP blames this disproportionate debt burden on the Trump administration’s cuts from DEI programs. The Department of Justice has determined that DEI grants are unconstitutional and that sex-based preferential treatment can be considered a violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Their new platform would also allow liberal professors to make curriculum decisions, boxing out oversight in a communist style form of “shared governance.” They specifically cite that 54 faculty have been suspended or terminated since fall 2025. They state that these professors were placed on watch lists where they dealt with “intimidation” and “efforts to limit and control their speech.” Several of these fired professors were promoting radical ideologies. Dr. Tom Alter was fired after speaking at a revolutionary socialist convention and making comments that some believed were inciting violence. Professor Melissa McCoul was fired for making her Texas A&M students read a book featuring a 12-year old nonbinary purple unicorn.

However, most of those professors faced consequences for publicly celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk. One, a law professor at the University of Arkansas, likened people mourning Kirk’s death to members of the Klu Klux Klan. Several of her fellow faculty members initially suggested that she should keep her job but receive a warning, although she was fired after a month of paid suspension. Professors from Florida Atlantic, Tennessee, and Georgia posted distasteful comments about Kirk’s death, ultimately getting themselves fired. Multiple professors at Clemson University were also fired for social media posts celebrating his death. The AUUP’s resolution for tuition-free colleges would allow professors like these to run rampant and easily secure tenure.

In the AAUP’s endorsement of Sayed, they state their hopes that he will “defend the rights of students and faculty to speak out on political issues, question authority, and engage in peaceful protest.” Sayed has a long history of engaging in protests, but they weren’t actually “peaceful.” In 2018, Sayed participated in a sit-in at a McDonalds, advocating for an increased minimum wage. He and 16 other protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct, to which he pleaded guilty. Sayed also held a leadership position for the group Michigan United. In May 2020, the group held a violent protest that turned into a riot. Cops were attacked and hospitalized, and one person was killed. By endorsing Sayed, the AAUP is inviting violent protests onto college campuses.

The AAUP’s break in historic precedence marks a new turn away from educational integrity towards activism. The group’s President, Todd Wolfson, said in 2025 that they would be committing to “militant action.” At their June 2026 meeting, they concluded that “defense alone” would not be sufficient for them anymore. They voted to pursue DEI programs, fight for a “mulitracial, inclusive democracy,” and double down on socializing “healthcare, housing, education, and economic security.” The AAUP made it clear that they hoped to pursue activism above all else– Which makes Abdul El-Sayed their perfect partner in crime.

Phoebe Gates and Phia co-founder Sophia Kianni reportedly pushed features allowing their shopping startup to claim affiliate commissions on sales it did not drive, with knowledge of the practice since December.

• Awareness timeline conflict: Bloomberg reported the founders knew of cookie stuffing since December via Slack messages, contradicting their July 8 claim they learned of it within the last 24 hours and blamed a software bug.

• How the scheme worked: Phia’s browser extension places tracking cookies during checkout without user intent, claiming credit for purchases on sites like Nike, Gap and Nordstrom even if unused.

• Partners ban the practice: Commercial partners prohibited cookie stuffing, yet the startup used three different strategies; Impact.com suspended Phia from its marketplace after the initial report.

• Lawsuit targets three founders: Five investors filed a Thursday lawsuit in Delaware federal court against Gomez, mother Mandy Teefey and Daniella Pierson alleging the app was never built and revenue never materialized.

• Company raised five million: Wondermind Global Inc. raised $5 million in a 2022 early-stage round from Serena Williams’s venture fund, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital while claiming a $95 million valuation.

• Gomez ignored marketing duties: As chief impact officer and head of marketing, Gomez failed contractual obligations to promote the mental fitness company partly due to long-running personal struggles with her mother Teefey.

• Founders stayed silent years: For three years while the company quietly collapsed around them, not one of its founders, officers or directors said a word to the investors about the failed initiatives.

Anthropic takes IPO meetings, but no one is talking numbers

Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao is leading high-level meetings with prospective investors ahead of a potential IPO, covering Claude models and enterprise strategy while avoiding specific financials or valuation, sources said.

• Claude models focus areas: Meetings cover Claude AI models, Claude Code development, enterprise market position, management composition and release volume without any specific financial details or targets.

• May funding valuation metrics: Anthropic closed a late May funding round at a $965 billion valuation after its run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion, up from roughly $10 billion in 2025.

Sandisk shares rose 3% on Friday after a 12% prior-session climb as the NAND flash maker set mid-to-high teens revenue growth targets and near 80% gross margins for 2028-2030.

• Multi-year customer contracts: RBC Capital noted the deals are multi-year, detailed by quarter or month, carry fixed pricing plus a variable element, and include financial guarantees supporting sustainability.

• Sustainable cycle outlook: Raymond James analysts said the guidance points toward sustainable margins and returns with lower volatility through the cycle despite volatile trends and unprecedented demand.

• Unique AI positioning: JPMorgan assigned an Overweight rating as analyst Harlan Sur said Sandisk is uniquely positioned to capture structural NAND demand growth driven by rapid AI inference expansion.

• Major year-to-date gains: Spun off from Western Digital in February 2025, Sandisk has gained more than 540% this year as memory emerged as a key AI infrastructure bottleneck with deficits extending ahead.

Short sellers flee as SpaceX races back to $150

SpaceX shares jumped 11% Wednesday to around $148, rebounding more than 40% from the Aug. 3 low near $105 and testing the $150 opening trade as short interest collapsed.

• Short interest falls sharply: Short interest fell to about 11% of publicly traded shares from a peak of 34% last week according to S3 Partners. “Shorts that wanted to short are out of bullets,” said Ihor Dusaniwsky.

Stand on a service road in the Orinoco Belt at seven in the morning and the first thing you notice is the noise. Not the heat, not the flare stacks on the horizon — the noise. Pumpjacks working. Trucks moving water. Crews on radios. Two years ago most of this acreage was silent, and the silence had lasted the better part of a decade.

That it is loud again is the most underreported economic story in the Western Hemisphere. And it traces back, directly and unambiguously, to a decision President Trump made in the first days of January.

The operation

On January 3, U.S. special operations forces went into Caracas and took Nicolás Maduro out of Venezuela. He was flown to New York to face narcotrafficking charges that had been pending against him for years. His wife went with him. The whole thing was over before most of the world had finished its first cup of coffee.

The critics were ready before the wheels were up. They called it imperialism. They called it reckless. They said it would trigger a regional war, collapse the Venezuelan state, and send a wave of refugees north that would dwarf anything the hemisphere had seen.

None of that happened.

What happened instead was that a narco-state with the largest proven oil reserves on earth — roughly 303 billion barrels, about 17 percent of the global total — began, within weeks, the process of rejoining the legitimate world economy. Political prisoners started walking out of El Helicoide, and by early March more than six hundred had been released. The detention center itself is slated to become a cultural and sports facility. American energy executives who had not set foot in Caracas in twenty years were on the ground by February.

Say what you want about the method. Judge it by the result. Twenty-seven years of Chavismo produced a country that could not keep the lights on while sitting on more oil than Saudi Arabia. Seven months of a functioning U.S.–Venezuela relationship has produced the fastest production recovery in the country’s modern history.

The second decision that made this work was Trump’s, too, and it was harder than the first.

When Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as acting president on January 5, the easy play for Washington was to install a favorite from the opposition and call it democracy restored. Trump didn’t do that. He looked at the actual balance of power inside Venezuela, concluded that Rodríguez was the person who could deliver, and decided to work with her.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio — who has spent his entire public career on Venezuela and knows the file better than anyone in American politics — reached the same judgment. That is not a small thing. Rubio had every political incentive to demand a maximalist outcome. He chose the outcome that would actually happen over the one that would have felt better in a press release.

Rodríguez has held up her end. She and Trump spoke by phone on January 14, and the President described it afterward as a very good call covering oil, minerals, trade, and national security. He has said publicly, more than once, that she is doing a fantastic job. The day after, in her first state of the union address, Rodríguez went before the National Assembly and called for opening the oil sector to foreign investment — a direct repudiation of the resource nationalism that has been Chavista scripture since 1999. She proposed routing oil revenue into two sovereign wealth funds, one for the collapsed health system and one for infrastructure.

Then she signed the reforms into law on July 8.

Consider what this woman has actually done. She inherited a government in which a substantial faction wanted to fight the United States, took the opposite course, and has held that course for seven months while dismantling the security apparatus that kept her own party in power. Whatever one thinks of where she started politically, the record since January is a record of delivery.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright went to Caracas on February 11 and promised to power a dramatic increase in Venezuelan output. By that same month, revenue from Venezuelan crude sales had already crossed a billion dollars, with the oil moving to American and European refineries. Trump has said U.S. companies will put at least $100 billion into rebuilding the country’s oil infrastructure.

How far the fall went

To understand what is being rebuilt, you have to understand what was lost.

In 1970, Venezuela produced 3.75 million barrels per day. It was, for a stretch of the twentieth century, the most important oil exporter in the Western Hemisphere and the founding intellectual force behind OPEC. As recently as October 2002, output stood near 3 million barrels per day.

Then came the long unwinding. The politicization and mass firing of PDVSA’s technical staff. Two decades of deferred maintenance on some of the most demanding heavy-oil infrastructure on earth. Expropriations that taught every serious operator in the world to stay away. By the time sanctions tightened in 2019, production had already fallen to about a million barrels a day. In June 2020 it bottomed at 337,000 barrels per day — roughly nine percent of the 1970 peak.

Nine percent. In a country sitting on 1.36 trillion barrels of oil in place in the Orinoco Belt alone.

The recovery since January is real and it is measurable. OPEC secondary sources put June 2026 output just above one million barrels per day, a 17.6 percent increase over 2025. PDVSA reported July production at 1.2 million. Exports ran 1.16 million barrels per day in July, and — this is the number that matters for American drivers — cargoes to the United States hit roughly 786,000 barrels per day, the highest level since early 2019.

Aldyl, and what technology actually does to a field

Which brings us to a 500-square-kilometer patch of the Faja and an Argentine company most Americans have never heard of.

Aldyl Argentina S.A. was founded in 1979 as an infrastructure business — water and gas conduction — and spent four decades building a services operation across Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale. It came to Venezuela in 2022 as a service provider in Morichal Pesado. As the investment framework changed, it formed a Venezuelan subsidiary, Aldyl Energía, and took over operation of a defined block within the field.

One clarification is worth making up front, because the figures that follow are easy to confuse with the headline numbers reported elsewhere. Morichal is a large field, most of it still operated by PDVSA, and total field output has been reported rising from roughly 45,000 to 65,000 barrels per day. Everything discussed below refers only to the 500-square kilometer block Aldyl itself operates — a portion of the field, not the whole of it. The comparison being drawn here is not Aldyl against PDVSA. It is Aldyl’s block today against the same block two years ago.

That acreage was producing 500 barrels per day when Rodríguez’s government allocated it. Five hundred. On a block that size, that number is not production. It is a rounding error on a decommissioning report.

Today Aldyl’s block alone produces close to 20,000 barrels per day.

Live look at crude extraction:

Julian Arostegui, Aldyl’s chief executive, is blunt about what separates his company from the rush of entrants that followed January.

“There are a lot of companies with a flag on a map in Venezuela right now. We are not that. We took a block producing five hundred barrels a day and we are producing close to twenty thousand. We have rigs on the ground and four hundred and seventy-six wells to reactivate. You cannot do that from an office in Houston or Buenos Aires. You do it by being in the field.”

Nobody drilled their way there. What Aldyl did instead is the actual story, and it is why the phrase Silicon Valley of crude is not a marketing line.

The company built its own software. Every well, every battery, every line on that 500 square kilometers reports into a real-time production monitoring system that Aldyl developed in house. Management indicators — not monthly, not weekly, but continuously. From that data layer they run AI-driven models for the things that historically ate the margins of every heavy-oil operator in the Faja: which wells to intervene and in what order, how to allocate crews and equipment across a field where a bad dispatch decision costs a day of production, where the next infrastructure dollar earns the highest return, how to staff a shift a month from now.

This is the part American energy investors should sit up for. The Orinoco has always been a megaproject basin — enormous capital, enormous timelines, enormous upgraders, and a decade before anyone sees a barrel. Aldyl is demonstrating a different model: take existing, degraded, apparently worthless acreage and multiply its output forty-fold through instrumentation, analytics, disciplined intervention, and relentless reinvestment of proceeds. It is closer to how a software company scales than how an oil major builds.

And they are reinvesting. Every dollar of margin has gone back into infrastructure and into people. On July 8, Aldyl unloaded four Drillmec rigs at the port of Guanta in Anzoátegui, off a direct charter from South America — a $20 million shipment that brings its total capital committed on the block to roughly $100 million. Three more H200 rigs land in September. The campaign now beginning targets 476 well reactivations and 79 new wells across 2026 and 2027, with a stated goal of 80,000 barrels per day from Aldyl’s acreage alone — more than the entire Morichal field produces today.

For context on how thin the field has been: Baker Hughes has counted as few as two active rigs in the entire country this year. Aldyl just landed four.

The personnel investment is the part that surprised us most on the ground. Aldyl has built multiple housing projects for staff across the field. Not camps — housing. In a region where the workforce collapse was as severe as the infrastructure collapse, and where a generation of trained Venezuelan petroleum engineers scattered across four continents, a company that builds houses is a company signaling that it intends to be there in twenty years.

Ask Arostegui what actually unlocked all of it and he does not credit his own engineers first.

“Two years ago no one would have financed a single rig here. What changed was not the oil. What changed was that Washington and Caracas decided to work together, and suddenly a company like ours could plan in years instead of weeks. We are the proof of what that makes possible, and we did it in months.”

The $100 billion objection

The most serious argument against everything written above comes from Francisco Monaldi, who runs the Latin America Energy Program at Rice University’s Baker Institute and is probably the most cited authority on Venezuelan oil economics alive. His assessment: rebuilding the country’s corroded infrastructure to sustain production above two million barrels per day will take roughly $100 billion and at least a decade. Other estimates in circulation run to $220 billion.

That number deserves a real answer rather than a dismissal, because it is doing enormous work in the market right now. It is the reason capital hesitates. It is the reason serious people describe the Venezuelan recovery as a mirage that will stall out somewhere around 1.3 million barrels.

So do the arithmetic on Aldyl’s block.

Monaldi’s estimate implies something close to $100,000 of capital for each incremental barrel of daily capacity — a hundred billion dollars to add roughly a million barrels a day. Aldyl has committed about $100 million on its acreage, and $20 million of that arrived last month as rigs for a campaign that has not yet produced a barrel. Call it $80 million of capital behind the production actually flowing today, against roughly 19,500 incremental barrels per day.

That is about $4,100 per incremental barrel.

Not eighty percent cheaper than the consensus. Not half. Roughly four percent of it.

The objection to this comparison is obvious and worth stating plainly: brownfield reactivation is the cheapest barrel in any basin. Aldyl is working acreage that was already drilled, already piped, already surveyed. Monaldi’s $100 billion covers a far wider scope — refineries, upgraders, export terminals, the power generation that has been the binding constraint on Venezuelan output for a decade, and eventually greenfield development in the deeper Faja where the capital intensity is genuinely brutal. The cheap barrels come first, and the marginal barrel gets more expensive from here. Anyone extrapolating $4,100 per barrel across the entire national recovery is selling something.

But grant all of that and the consensus estimate still looks badly overstated, for a reason that has nothing to do with geology.

Monaldi’s number assumes the cost structure of the industry that built the Faja — the megaproject model, where you spend a decade and tens of billions before first oil because that was the only way anyone knew to develop extra-heavy crude at scale. That model was designed in the 1990s. It priced in armies of field personnel, monthly reporting cycles, intervention schedules set by committee, and infrastructure built to a plan drawn years before anyone knew which wells would actually respond.

Aldyl is not paying those costs, because Aldyl is not running that operation. Continuous instrumentation across the field means the company knows which of several hundred candidate wells will repay an intervention before it sends a crew. Analytics-driven dispatch means the crew it sends is the right crew on the right day. Infrastructure follows demonstrated production rather than preceding it. Every one of those is a capital efficiency, and they compound.

There is a reasonable version of this argument and an unreasonable one. The unreasonable version is that one 500-square-kilometer block disproves Monaldi. It doesn’t — a single field is not a national capital plan, and honest advocates should say so.

The reasonable version is this: a large share of the first million incremental barrels in Venezuela sits on brownfield acreage that looks a great deal like Morichal Pesado, and there is now a live, operating demonstration that those barrels can be recovered at a small fraction of the assumed cost, on a timeline measured in quarters rather than decades. On one block, Aldyl went from 500 barrels a day to 20,000 in the time it would take a megaproject to complete a feasibility study.

If even a third of the country’s near-term recovery follows that template, the $100 billion figure is off by an order of magnitude on the portion that matters most — the portion that determines whether Venezuelan crude is flowing to Gulf Coast refineries in 2028 or in 2038. That is not a rounding error in a forecast. That is the difference between a hemispheric energy strategy that works and one that stays on a whiteboard.

The consensus was built by watching the old model fail. It has not yet priced in a new one.

Arostegui puts it less diplomatically.

“People said Venezuela would take a decade. We did forty times our production in under two years, on one block. The decade estimate was never about geology. It was about governance.”

The hemispheric case

The strategic logic of all this is straightforward, and it is exactly the logic Trump, Rubio, and Wright have been articulating since January.

Every barrel that comes out of the Orinoco is a barrel that does not have to come from the Persian Gulf, does not have to transit a strait that Iran periodically threatens to close, and does not have to be bought from a regime that funds people trying to kill Americans. It is a barrel produced roughly 2,000 miles from Gulf Coast refineries that were literally designed to process Venezuelan heavy crude and have been running below their optimal slate for years.

Affordable energy independence for the Western Hemisphere is not a slogan. It is an achievable engineering and capital allocation problem, and the constraint was never geology. Venezuela has the oil. The constraint was governance, and the governance changed in January.

Arostegui frames the ambition in terms of what this country used to be rather than what it has been.

“This country produced almost four million barrels a day. That capacity did not disappear — the geology is still there, the fields are still there. What was missing was the will to invest and a government that wanted the investment. Every barrel we bring back is a barrel the hemisphere does not have to buy from people who do not wish it well.”

Rodríguez wants production up. Trump wants production up. Rubio wants production up. Companies like Aldyl are the mechanism by which that shared goal turns into barrels — not through another twenty-year megaproject announcement, but through technology applied hard to acreage everyone else wrote off.

The Faja is loud again. Anyone who thinks that happened by accident wasn’t paying attention on January 3.
